One library day in Sello library, Finland

Есть такой проект Library Day in the Life. Два раза в год библиотекари разных форматов и из разных частей света рассказывают о своих буднях. В основном на английском, поэтому в виде исключения этот пост по-английски. Версия по-русски, надеюсь, скоро выйдет!

One day in a Sello library, Espoo, Finland
Thursday 2nd of Feb 2012 >>>

Sello LibraryMy working day here in Sello Library starts mostly at 8.00, bit too early for my taste, though some people come even earlier, welcome to Finland!
At 8.30 all the staff who are making their morning shift are gathering for a traditional morning meeting at the lobby of the library next to the main entrance. At this time doors of the library are already open for the public, so sometimes our customers take part to a conversation.

The meeting starts with so called “hissipuhe” or “Lift speech”, which means you can say whatever you have to say. If you happen to read some interesting article or noticed some grate innovation or participated in a new project, – you have a good opportunity to mention it (not more then 5 min speaking time!) Then we quickly go through the coming happenings of the day.

After the “main” meeting I had some time for checking my emails and a quick briefing with my own Adults Fiction and Non-fiction Department before “being borrowed” by a customer for an hour. There is a service in four Public Libraries of Espoo called “Borrow a Librarian”, when staff can be “booked” by a customer for getting information (of any kind). Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Usually people have questions related to computer using, sometimes databases or literature.
This time I met a Russian speaking elderly lady who asked advice about sending attachments by email, saving documents on the memory stick and renewing the loans online. Nothing difficult, but as a native Russian I could explain everything quite fast using native language of the customer. I “had been borrowed” by Natalia already for the second time.

After meeting Natalia there is some time for checking lists and news of Russian language children literature for ordering to the library. There is relatively big collection of Russian literature in Sello library and I’m a member of a “choosing team”.

Then lunch time and after that puppet theater rehearsal. In April there will be a premier of a new puppet play for children with what we are going to perform in several libraries and maybe schools.

This kind of day.
